Symptom Free, No Appointment Required Covid-19 Testing to take place at the Tralee Covid-19 test centre.

As part of the HSE’s enhanced Covid-19 testing for local communities, the Tralee test centre will facilitate Covid-19 tests without requiring an advance appointment for those who are symptom-free.

From this Wednesday, April 21st, for one week, the existing test centre at Ballymullen Barracks will offer Covid-19 people to asymptomatic people in the Tralee area. On weekdays and Saturday the appointment-free testing will run from 9.30am to midday and from 2pm to 5pm; and on Sunday the times for walk-in tests will be 2pm to 5pm.

The walk-in / no appointment necessary testing will operate alongside the existing testing at the centre whereby GPs refer those with symptoms, and close contacts of a confirmed case of Covid-19, for their Covid-19 test.

Walk-in test centres of this kind have opened in a number of locations around the country in recent weeks. These no appointment necessary testing centres offer those with no symptoms of Covid-19 an opportunity to be tested, allowing for the raising of awareness.

The testing service for those with symptoms and those who are close contacts of confirmed cases of Covid-19, which are arranged via GPs will also continue to operate as usual at the Tralee test centre.

Commenting Niamh O Beirne, HSE Lead for Test and Trace said: “Over the last month we have established Covid-19 walk-in test centres in various locations across the country. These centres support both the HSE’s enhanced Covid-19 testing for local communities and allow further identification and understanding of any variants of concern within our communities. As of this morning, Monday April 19th, 35,284 people have availed of COVID 19 testing in these walk-in centres. The positivity rate to date is 2.87% which equates to 981 people testing positive for Covid-19 as a result of getting a test in one of these walk-in centre. These positive cases would not have been identified without this targeted asymptomatic testing and getting tested has enabled those who are Covid-19 positive take the necessary actions to protect those around them”.

Dr Anne Sheahan, acting Director of Public Health (HSE South) said:
“Thankfully, the level of Covid-19 in Tralee and the surrounding regions remains comparatively low. The finding from this additional testing should give us an indication of what the level of infection is in the area. I encourage anyone in the region to take up this opportunity for testing as it will help us to contain the small number of cases of Covid-19 in the region.”

Priscilla Lynch, Head of Health and Wellbeing with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare said, “This is a welcomed addition to Covid-19 services in the region. Staff at the Tralee test centre will provide a warm welcome and an efficient, safe testing service to everyone who comes forward for a test. The people of the region have done a fantastic job in recent weeks and months in sticking to the measures which prevent the spread of Covid-19. Taking up this opportunity for testing even when you don’t have symptoms will help us to go a step further again in containing any cases.”

You should use this free, walk-in COVID-19 testing service if you:
-are aged 16 years and over
-do not have symptoms of Covid-19 but would like to be tested
-have not tested positive for Covid-19 in the last six months
-Remember, it’s 1 test per person.

You must bring photo identification with you and provide us with a mobile telephone number so we can contact you with your results.

You can avail of a free Covid-19 test without having an appointment in advance between 9.30am to midday; and 2pm to 5pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday.

This testing will begin on April 21st and run for seven days, ending on April 27th.

Social distancing measures will apply as people attend for testing. If the waiting times are too long for you, you are welcome to return at another time or day.
